Tie-up for graduate courses

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR JUNE 25. South Bank University, London, has tied up with the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Applied Sciences(MGIAS) here for graduate courses in engineering, science and computer. The agreement envisages exchange programme of teachers and one-year study for students at the South Bank campus in London.

This is the first collaboration for the South Bank University in Rajasthan. In Delhi it has an MoU with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and similar tie-ups with the Agricultural Research Institute, Pusa, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, CFTRI, Mysore, a Master's degree programme with Lyola College, Chennai, and an exchange programme with St.Xavier's Kolkata.

``All our programmes are vocationally oriented,'' said Alan Beeby, head of Biosciences division, South Bank University who was here along with Jim Pervez, head of the Computer Networks division and Ajay Mitra, coordinator. Last December, the results of the First Destination Survey had placed the University in the top five institutions in the UK for best graduate employability with only 5 per cent out of the 2001 batch remaining unemployed after six months of graduation, he pointed out.

Amit Agarwal, director, MGIAS said the fees structure for the courses had been subsidized at Rs.60000-70000 a year while in India but the final year in the South Bank campus would cost the student the normal charges, which came to 6000-7000 pounds.

``We are equal partners,'' Dr. Beeby said referring to the tie-up with MGIAS, which is part of the Jaipur Engineering College and Research Foundation(JECRC). The future programmes included starting of post graduate courses and joint research, he said.
