Former Haryana Minister held

By Our Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH JUNE 25. Officials of the Haryana State Vigilance Bureau have arrested Vinod Maria, a former Minister in the erstwhile HVP regime and one-time close confidant of Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala, from his house in Panchkula near here on charges of amassing property valued at over Rs.50 lakhs disproportionate to his assets.

An official spokesman said here today that a case had been registered against Maria under Section 13 (1) (e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, in Ambala on the basis of an enquiry conducted by the Bureau.

He further disclosed that Mr. Maria had remained Minister from January 15, 1997, to December 14, 1999, and during this period he had purchased 2.75 acres of land in Sunderpur Dhani village near Barwala in the name of his son, Vishal, and another close relative, Krishan Gopal, which was being used as a poultry farm. The former Minister reportedly invested Rs.55 lakhs in the farm. However, Mr. Maria reportedly showed the investment in the name of his wife and son Vishal. Vigilance Bureau sources said this could not be believed as both the wife and the son were dependent on the accused. Moreover, the money invested in the farm was neither accounted for nor reflected in his tax returns as per facts on record.

He said Mr. Maria would be produced before the competent court of law and investigation was in progress. The Vigilance Bureau was also examining in detail records relating to other properties owned by the former Minister.

Meanwhile, the Bureau apprehended Joginder Singh, Assistant Soil Conservation Officer, Kandi Project, Yamunanagar, while accepting Rs.10,000 as a bribe from Satbir Singh,

Agriculture Development Officer, Kandi Project,Yamunanagar, in lieu of inspection of the work at the site to be executed by the complainant.
