All-party meet to discuss functioning of PDS

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI June 25. The Centre today announced that an all-party meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, would be held here on July 18 to discuss ways to tone up the Public Distribution System. The meeting has been convened in the wake of complaints of several shortcomings in the functioning of PDS. A common complaint had been that the foodstocks were not reaching the targeted population in time.

The meeting is expected to identify the bottlenecks in the movement of the grains and come out with solutions to address them. A major problem with the PDS was that it is the joint responsibility of the Centre and the States.

While the Food Corporation of India under the Union Food Ministry acts as the custodian of the grains, procuring and transporting them to the districts, the States are responsible for the issuance of ration cards and distribution of grains through fair price ration shops.
