Uncertainty over re-opening of canal

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL June 25. Uncertainty prevailed over the reopening of the Tungabhadra canal with very little water flowing into the reservoir at Hospet. According to reports, the level in the Tungabhadra reservoir was recorded at 1562.81 ft accounting for a storage of 0.172 tmcft. The inflow into the reservoir was nil.

The level in the reservoir during the corresponding period last year was 1572.4 ft accounting for a storage of 12.35 tmcft. The flow into the reservoir was around 2,672 cusecs. Last year, the LLC, which supplied water to both AP and Karnataka areas, was reopened on July 2. But the Board authorities did not yet decide on the reopening this year.

The Superintending Engineer, Abdul Basheer, said if the catchment area receives heavy rain, the situation would change overnight. The catchment area of the river in Shimoga and other places started receiving rain but the flow would take some time to traverse to the TB dam.

Based on the statistics available in the last 50 years, the Tungabhadra Board projected a total realisation of 175 tmcft at the TB dam this year. Last year, 115.5 tmcft was realised which was considered the lowest since the inception of the dam in 1953. One could not think of reopening the KC canal until the flow stabilised in the Tungabhadra river at Sunkesula.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed at Rajolibanda diversion scheme (RDS) on the Karnataka-Andhra Pradesh border with RDS canal farmers demanding the closure of vents in the anicut, which allowed flow into the river. Out of 10 vents which were created at the time of the construction of the anicut, seven were closed while three still functioned. The farmers under RDS demanded closure of three vents too, which let around 150 cusecs downstream facilitating flow to the KC canal.
