By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD June 25. The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) is considering a proposal to shortly start M.Tech course in bioinformatics, according to the Vice-Chancellor, Y.Venkatarami Reddy.

Speaking at the inauguration of the second batch of advanced training course in bioinformatics, jointly conducted by the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing and JNTU, at IICT, here on Wednesday, he described the current time as the age of collaboration.

Prof. Reddy said that collaboration would result in the spread of knowledge, which should be shared and not restricted. "Progress is possible when you share knowledge with others. In this competitive age, only people with knowledge had a future. Subjects like bioinformatics had a good future.

Inaugurating the four-and-a-half-month training course, R.K.Arora, Executive Director, CDAC in the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, said bioinformatics had tremendous growth prospects.

The fact that 70 per cent of the first batch of 30 students were absorbed indicated the prospects. In view of this, CDAC is considering introduction of a degree course, he added.

K.V.Raghavan, Director of IICT, who chaired the inaugural function, stated that exciting developments were possible in bioinformatics in the coming decades in view of its influence in the areas of health and chemicals.

He said IICT, CDAC and JNTU were hoping to work at global level following the signing of the agreement signed last week to organise the advanced course. Jairam of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, attended the function.

Earlier, U.S.N.Murthy, Deputy Director, IICT, welcomed the gathering. N. Sarat Chandra Babu, Programme Coordinator and Head, CDAC, Hyderabad, proposed a vote thanks.
