D. Ravindra Naik, former Minister, who chaired the Sadassu, moved the resolutions, one of which sought immediate sanction of the Rs.2,500 crore project by the Central Government for the uplift of tribal areas in the country, as proposed by the Tribal Welfare Commissioner. The demands raised in the resolutions include declaration of Girijan thandas as gram panchayats, strict implementation of reservations, in-service training programmes for tribals, distribution of pattas to landless Girijans and revival of bright boys and best available schools scheme. The Sadassu, according to a statement issued by Mr. Naik here on Wednesday, demanded upgradation of schools for STs in this academic year, allotment of house-sites/houses for shelterless tribals and scrapping of the deputation system. Mr. Naik wanted the Government to create a tribal development service on the lines of the one existing in the Forest and Revenue departments, "proper'' department postings to tribal IAS, IPS and IFS officers, and strict implementation of Regulation 1/70. He drew the attention of both the State and Central governments to the plight of poor tribals who resorted to distress sale of their children and took to prostitution for sustenance.
