Briefing presspersons, Mr. Gore said 1.65 lakh tonnes of foodgrains, including the quantity to be distributed under the PDS, was available with the State. Although the drought was continuing, several works under the Food for work programme would have to be stopped because of a likely shortage of foodgrain. He estimated that some 10,000 works had been stopped, and foodgrain distribution under 34,000 works was affected. The allotment from the Centre was 6.65 lakh tonnes, while the State urgently required an additional three-lakh tonnes of foodgrains. The drought situation was critical in several taluks 107 taluks had deficit rainfall, 10 taluks almost no rainfall, and in around 50 taluks it was near normal. Karnataka was in an unenviable position as over 70 per cent of its area under cultivation was rain-fed. At present, only 22 per cent was irrigated, and when all the irrigation projects were completed, the area under irrigation would go up to 30 per cent. The need was a massive investment in watershed development programmes. About two lakh hectares of land was under the watershed programme at present, and there was need to cover about 80 lakh hectares of land, he added.
