Sethu Rao passes away

Bangalore June 25. M.A.Sethu Rao (78), one of the founders of the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology and known for his efforts to popularise science among the people through Kannada, passed away here today. Prof. Rao is survived by a son and two daughters.

Prof. Rao was a freedom fighter and active in the peace movement.

He was imprisoned for five months for participating in the Quit India movement of 1942. After taking his master's degree in Chemistry from the Central College in 1946, he served as a lecturer in the same college. In 1975, he became the Founder-Secretary of the State Council for Science and Technology. He later founded the Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat, and served as its secretary and president.

Prof. Rao was the President of the Karnataka State Peace and Solidarity Organisation. His wife, Kunthala, too was an active member.

He was the Founder-President of the Karnataka College Teachers' Association. He was the author of a good number of books on science in Kannada, and won the national award for the popularisation of science and technology in a regional language.

The State Council of the Communist Party of India has mourned the death of Prof. Rao.
