Some corporators and "pourakarmikas" comprised the bulk of the gathering. K.N.Gaddi, Minister of State for Forests and Minister in charge of Dharwad District, who was to unveil the statue, headed the list of those who failed to make it to the function. The list of absentees also included Jagadish Shettar, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, who represents Hubli Rural, which is a part of the corporation area. The statue, built at a cost of Rs.5.60 lakhs, had been lying in a warehouse since the municipal corporation authorities were not sure about when and where to install it. But hurried preparations were made by the Mayor, Prakash Kyarakatti, whose tenure ends on Friday. In the absence of the chief guest, G.M. Patil, Chairman of the Loka Shikshana Trust, the publishers of the Samyukta Karnataka group of papers, unveiled the statue. A.M. Hindasgeri, former Minister, and Raja Desai, Chairman of the Hubli Dharwad Urban Development Authority, spoke. Mr. Kyarakatti presided. Freedom fighters were felicitated.
