CPI(M) stages dharna in Bellary

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY June 25. Members of the Bellary District unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's Office here on Wednesday demanding that drought relief measures be implemented effectively. In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, they pointed out that the plight of the people, especially farmers and farm labourers, had worsened because of the failure of the monsoon for the third year. They said farmers and farm labourers were jobless because of the drought. The relief measures taken up had not helped them, they added.

They demanded that works be taken up in villages to provide employment to the needy for about a month. The authorities should avoid using machinery, and set up fodder banks and goshalas in gram panchayats. Steps should be taken to improve water supply.

The 10 per cent contribution from the people to the cost of implementing drinking water projects under the Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Technology Mission should be exempted in view of the drought.

U.Basavaraj, General Secretary of the CPI(M), V.S.Shiva Shankar, K.Gadilingappa, Vishwanath Swamy, Haleshwar Gowda, among others, led the dharna.
