Another male bastion stormed

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JUNE 25. Seeing a woman driving an autorickshaw on the busy roads of the Capital is a rare spectacle for Delhiites. On Monday, 25-year-old Sunita Chaudhary stormed yet another male bastion by becoming the first women auto-driver in the Capital.

A trained driver from the Capital-based Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR), Sunita (25) left her Mehrauli home in the morning on Monday and drove all day long till evening ferrying passengers across the Capital.

Sunita, who was today inducted as the secretary of the National Panthers Party's Delhi unit, decided to become an auto-driver to encourage more women to join her so that women commuters in the Capital can feel safe, particularly at night. Having experienced a great deal of difficulty in commuting at night, she now hopes that her effort would bring in the much- needed change.

Sunita has also freelanced for several Hindi dailies and in her writings, she has focussed primarily on issues relating to women like dowry cases, sexual harassment and women's empowerment. And as a social worker, she has been providing free legal aid to needy and hapless women.
