Corporate honour for Gilchrist

Sydney June 25. Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist's ethical decision to `walk' during this year's World Cup has opened doors for a place in the corporate world.

Gilchrist has joined foreign exchange company Travelex as a non-executive director, the company announced on Wednesday.

The company already sponsors Gilchrist but said it chose him after his decision to walk in the World Cup semifinal against Sri Lanka despite being given not out.

Company chairman Lloyd Dorfman said Gilchrist showed strong ethics in a high-pressure situation. ``Here you've got a guy who is prepared to walk himself out in the critical moment in the semifinal of a World Cup tournament, and in terms of integrity I don't think you can do much better than that,'' Dorfman said.

Gilchrist surprised even his team-mates when he gave himself out in the match at Port Elizabeth in South Africa last March.

He had made 22 when he tried to sweep spinner Aravinda De Silva and was caught by wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara.

The Sri Lankans appealed but umpire Rudi Koertzen turned them down, only for Gilchrist to head back to the dressing room.

De Silva hailed the sporting Gilchrist as a ``gentleman''.

``It is very rare to see batsmen walking off.

There are still some gentlemen in the game,'' De Silva said at the time. — AFP
