dated June 26, 1953: Combined Efforts to Settle Suez Dispute

An important meeting between India's Mr. Nehru, Pakistan's Mr. Mohammad Ali, and President Naguib of Egypt took place in Cairo to discuss the problems of the Suez Canal base. Mr. Nehru had met General Naguib earlier for over an hour. The talks between the three statesmen took place in the Republican Palace — formerly known as the Abdin Palace. Mr. Nehru was accompanied by Indian Ambassador Sardar Panikkar, while Sir Zafrullah Khan assisted Mr. Mohammed Ali, General Naguib's team included Deputy Premier Gamal Abdul Nasser and Major Salah Salem, Minister of National Guidance who were two of Egypt's top negotiators. President Naguib who had intended to meet Mr. Nehru on arrival at the airport, missed him by a few minutes. Without standing an ceremony, he ordered his driver to speed across the streets and caught up with Mr. Nehru at the Semiramis Hotel overlooking the Nile, where his Indian guest was about to have his morning shave.
