dated June 20, 1953: Jinarajadasa Dead

Death came from heart attack on the 19th at Wheaton, Illinois (USA) to Mr. C. Jinarajadasa (77), former President of the Theosophical Society. Vice-President of the Theosophical Society from 1921 to 1928, he succeeded Dr. G. S. Arundale as President, and held the office from February 1946 for seven years.

Born in Ceylon of Buddhist parents in 1875, when 13 he was taken to England. After education in private schools he entered Cambridge University, where after four years' study he took his Honours Degree in Sanskrit and Philosophy. In December 1901, he attended the Adyar Convention for the first time and in consequence of several conversations with Dr. Annie Besant, the then President, he decided to take up lecturing. He worked closely with Dr. Besant. He wrote several works dealing with art as well. His works included "First Principles of Theosophy", "Theosophy and Modern Thought". The latest was "Occult Chemistry", which he edited and enlarged. A man of broad sympathies and wide interests, Mr. Jinarajadasa left behind a number of friends of all nationalities and religions to mourn his passing.
