The heat fury ebbed in north India too where a partly cloudy sky and a cool breeze blowing across the region brought down the temperature by 10 degrees Celsius. However, Titilagarh in Orrisa baked at 48.1 degrees as the heat wave sweeping the State showed no signs of relenting. In Balangir district, the mercury, which zoomed to 50.1 degree Celsius this week, fell marginally as hot winds swept the western belt of the State. Rains lashed several districts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu as the southwest monsoon advanced into the two states. Kozhikode in Kerala received 14 cm of rain, Kochi 8 cm, Alleppey 7 cm and Kottayam 3 cm, the weather office said. In Tamil Nadu, showers brought relief in the southern parts with the mid-day temperatures dropping to around 41 degrees. Krishnagiri recorded 6 cm of rain and Perambalur, Nagercoil and Kumbakonam 5 cm. Scattered showers in Andhra Pradesh, wilting under an intense heat wave, slid the mercury by four to eight degrees Celisus. The toll in the State stood at 1,317 with no fatality reported from anywhere since last evening. In Vijayawada, where the mercury rose to 48 degree Celsius yesterday, there was some respite today . Temperatures fell appreciably in many parts of North India. Ambala in Haryana recording a high of 35 degree Celsius, down by 10 degree Celsius. PTI
