Maheswari creating confusion, says Coimbatore DCC

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE June 8. The Coimbatore District Congress Committee has accused the party MLA, S. Maheswari, of having an AIADMK tilt and creating confusion in the unit.

(Six party members quit their posts on June 5 stating the DCC president, Kovai Thangam, continued to function as a Tamil Maanila Congress leader and discriminated against ``original'' Congress members. And, Ms. Maheshwari accused Mr. Thangam of attempts to retain the TMC identity within the party.)

The urban district vice-president, K. P. S. Mani, wondered in a statement whether Ms. Maheshwari was acting at the behest of the AIADMK. ``Her statements only made one suspect that she wants to engineer a split in the district unit at the instigation of the AIADMK''. ``Even in the Sattankulam byelection, Ms. Maheswari did not campaign for the party candidate, making one suspect whether she was scared of the ruling party'', the statement said.

Rejecting the charges of a strong TMC tilt, the statement said top priority had been accorded to the original Congressmen in the election of the office-bearers. Besides, the list had also the approval of the TNCC president, S. Balakrishnan, and the working president, E. V. K. S. Elangovan.

Ms. Maheswari boycotted party meetings though she claims that no invitations were sent to her, the statement said.

It also sought to tactfully distance the former Union Minister, R. Prabhu, from Ms. Maheshwari's protest, stating that 30 of the new office-bearers were close to Mr. Prabhu and it could be possible that the MLA was using his name to settle scores with the DCC for not appointing her nominees.

When contacted, Ms. Maheshwari told The Hindu that the statement was an attempt at diverting attention from the real issue (of the TMC tilt) and that she may contemplate legal action.
