MCH efforts to make city litter-free

By J.S.Ifthekhar

HYDERABAD June 7. As part of its drive to make Hyderabad litter-free, the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad has planned to install plastic litterbins all over the city. Combining utility with elegance, these bins will be placed at regular intervals on the main roads to start with.

The corporation has decided to go in for modern street furniture as at present, the city lacks such a facility. If one wants to throw a paper or a polythene bag while walking on the road, one has to practically search for a bin. The existing garbage bins are meant for disposal of bulk garbage and are not conveniently accessible, it is felt.

The corporation plans to go in for smart street furniture conforming to international standards. The present Micky Mouse type bins are considered not sufficient. The civic body is looking for plastic bins, wheel-barrows and trolleys which are easy to install, clean and maintain. Depending on the need, bins of different capacities will be acquired, it is said.

The corporation is currently holding talks with some of the top companies, which are leaders in the manufacture of litterbins for municipal solid waste and is expected to finalise the deal shortly.

With a view to raising the level of sanitation in the slums, the corporation has planned to provide 50,000 individual toilets at highly subsidised rates. It is also proposed to demolish the existing toilets in the commercial places and build modern pay and use toilets. The project would be executed with the involvement of private parties on Build, Operate and Transfer basis. To start with, 100 such toilets will be built. The whole thing is in the finalisation stage, the MCH Commissioner, Chitra Ramchandran, said.

She said under the Nirmal Abhyan Scheme, community toilets would be built wherever required. The Rs.5-crore scheme would be funded by HUDCO. All these projects are expected to be grounded in next three to four months.
