Peace march on June 14

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD June 7. In the light of communal clashes in the old city, the State Government on Saturday appealed to people not to believe in rumours and cooperate with the Government in restoring peace and harmony.

Addressing a press conference here, Ministers, T. Srinivas Yadav and K. Vijayarama Rao, and the city Mayor, T. Krishna Reddy, expressed concern that a scuffle between a few individuals resulting in the killing of one person had led to tension in the city. The people should be cautious with the divisive and anti-social elements that try to take advantage of the situation and flare up the tensions.

They said that as part of efforts to restore peace and harmony, the Government would conduct a peace march from Charminar to Abids on June 14 which would be preceded by a meeting of all communities at Bharat Grounds in Asifnagar being organised by the ruling TDP, and appealed to all sections of society, including the political parties, to participate in the events.

``It is unfortunate that some political parties are trying to take mileage out of such sensitive issue instead of exercising caution,'' they said. However, the Ministers evaded replies when asked about the name of the political party which was trying to gain mileage out of the issue.

Asserting that the Government would firmly deal with the culprits, they said that timely action by the local police could have helped reduce the tension in the area. However, the visit of the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, and his announcement of a judicial probe had diluted the tension to a large extent.

To a question, the Ministers said that the judicial probe would not have any impact on the police investigation. In fact, the probe had been ordered to go into the circumstances which led to the incidents.
