S. Kannan, Honorary Environment Advisor to the Transport Commissioner, has a word of advice for those interested in keeping the roads in the City pollution-free. "Please buy and drive vehicles which cause less pollution, like four-stroke two-wheelers, and stop using old two-wheelers which cannot stop polluting the air even after major repairs.'' Older cars with petrol engines need a "choke" or one cannot be sure of restarting after stopping at traffic signals. Two-wheeler owners should keep their silencers clean and use the right quantity of engine oil with every litre of petrol. Those with a "catalytic converter" need "bypass surgery" to let out exhaust gases. ``Please switch off your engines at traffic signals and turn the ignition on only after the yellow light comes on; otherwise, you will make others waiting behind you inhale polluted air,'' Mr. Kannan warns. Those buying a two-wheeler should not go for those with two-stroke engines because they will not meet future emission norms. This is a must even if tempting loan offers are made by dealers, he adds. The "auto surgeon", who was present at the World Environment Day seminar, at the KSRTC headquarters on Thursday can be contacted on ph: 6691148/6669210.
