'Number one judge' lands in jail

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry June 7. The judicial magistrate-II, S. Isvaran, on Friday convicted and sentenced an imposter to undergo simple imprisonment for six months and ten months under various sections and also slapped a fine of Rs. 500 and in default to undergo simple imprisonment for a month.

L. Sasikumar of Namakkal, posing himself as a "Number One" judge in Pondicherry court, stayed in the Government-run Sea Gulls restaurant.

The fraud came to light when a helper in the restaurant lodged a complaint with the CID police on August 6, 2002, stating that Sasikumar (20) had impersonated as judge of Pondicherry. The CID police swung into action and arrested him immediately. Two rubber stamps and a letter pad containing his name as "L. Sasikumar B.Sc, ML Number One Judge `A' grade (Supreme Court appointed)" were seized from him.

A communication from the Superintendent of Police (CID wing), Firoze Zia Hussain, said the sentences would run concurrently and the period of sentence already undergone by the accused ordered to be set off. The accused paid the fine.

Convicted for misappropriation

In another case, Sankaranarayanan of Rajaji Nagar was sentenced to undergo simple imprisonment for one year and rigorous imprisonment for two years under various sections and to pay a fine of Rs. 2,000 and in default to undergo rigorous imprisonment for four months.

He was also sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for one year on each count under sections 420 and 468 IPC and to pay a fine of Rs. 1000 on each count and in default to undergo rigorous imprisonment for three months. The sentences would run concurrently.

Gabriel Prgasam of New Friends Colony, New Delhi, had complained in June 1994 that Sankaranarayanan and Chitra Sankaranarayanan had conspired to cheat the complainant and others by inducting them as shareholders and inducing them to invest their shares in Surya Mal Feeds Private Limited by `fraudulent means'.

The Superintendent of Police said Sankaranarayanan and Chitra Sankaranarayanan cheated Gabriel Pragasam and other shareholders by `falsification of accounts and forging of documents' and `misappropriated' Rs. 61.16 lakhs.

The judge, however, acquitted Chitra Sankaranarayanan.
