CII delegation for U.S.

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JUNE 7. A core group of CII members will accompany Arun Jaitley, Minister for Commerce and Industry, who is leading an Indian business delegation to the U.S.

The focus of the weeklong visit, beginning tomorrow, is to create an environment for increased Indo-U.S. trade and economic cooperation. Apart from the key industry captains, Mr. Jaitley is also being accompanied by the Commerce Secretary and other senior officials from the Ministry. The CII group is being led by Gautam Thapar, Chairman, CII Northern Region and Vice-Chairman & Managing Director, Ballarpur Industries Limited.

The visit of Mr. Jaitley assumes significance in view of the coming Cancun WTO meeting and the various multilateral and bilateral discussions currently under way. Several key bilateral issues such as the restoration of GSP benefits to chemicals and pharmaceuticals, U.S. legislation on outsourcing, the Totalisation Agreement, Anti-Dumping action on several Indian products, H-1B and L-1 visa issues, are likely to figure in the talks with U.S. officials.
