`Security problems have worsened'

By Our Staff Correspondent

Udupi June 7. The KPCC President, B. Janardhana Poojary, said on Saturday that the country's security problems had worsened under the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre.

He was speaking at the Congress workers' convention organised by the Udupi block unit of the Congress, here.

Mr. Poojary said terrorists had entered Parliament House premises, and the MPs had narrowly escaped being attacked. This was despite the fact that the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, was warned by the Maharashtra Government of the possibility of an attack one month in advance.

The Centre had not bothered to take precautionary measures. Although Pakistani supporters had advanced 150 km. into Indian territory at Kargil, the Prime Minister and the Defence Minister, George Fernandes, were unaware of it. Although Mr. Vajpayee said Indian troops had won the Kargil war, the then U.S. President, Bill Clinton, had said that it was due to his country's pressure that Pakistan had withdrawn. The Centre had not refuted this claim of Mr. Clinton, he added.

Mr. Poojary alleged that the Union Government was insensitive to the plight of ordinary people. He said the Centre had removed import restrictions on 10,500 items, which affected the agricultural and industrial sectors. The country had become a dumping ground for goods from the West. In the name of disinvestment, many public sector undertakings had been sold, and there was no transparency in the proceedings. The VRS had been forced on many people with untold consequences for their families. There were no more recruitments to banks, he added.

He questioned the Government's efforts for the uplift of SCs and STs.

Vinaykumar Sorake, MP, said the NDA Government's rule at the Centre had been marred by scandals, such as the coffin scam and the petrol pump scam. U.R. Sabhapathy, MLA, welcomed the gathering.
