By Our Special Correspondent
Ms. Venugopal, who is the daughter of the senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, told presspersons that Mr. Karunakaran was unhappy about the continuation of Prof. Thomas in the Ministry, Prof. Thomas having deserted him after becoming a Minister as an `I' group nominee. Mr. Karunakaran might be refraining from raising the issue to avoid friction with the `A' group and the Chief Minister. There was also no certainty that a demand for ouster of Prof. K. V. Thomas would be conceded. The chairperson said that the Tourism Department was not being helpful to the KTDC in its business. The KTDC was not being given an adequate role in roadshows organised by the department. The business directed to the KTDC by the information counters of the Tourism Department came to only one per cent of the bookings of the KTDC. Where the rest of the business was being directed to need to be looked into. However, the Chief Minister was helpful when she had approached him for assistance. She said that she would resign the post of the chairperson, if the Government refrained from supporting to the KTDC. She could not continue without Government support, though she could manage despite the lack of cooperation from the part of the Tourism Department and the Minister. She had complained about the non-cooperation by the department to the Chief Minister, the KPCC president, K. Muraleedharan, and the UDF convener, Oommen Chandy, in writing. Denying Prof. Thomas's contention that there were no groups in the Congress now, she said that the existence of the groups was a reality. The Minister should have stepped down on his own as he ceased to be with the `I' group. His continuation was immoral, as he had betrayed Mr. Karunakaran and the `I' group. Mr. Karunakaran helped many people only to be betrayed later. Referring to the Minister's allegations that she went on foreign trips frequently, Ms. Venugopal said that she had gone abroad four times only and those trips were all with the Minister. However, the Minister had gone on other foreign tours too. She had gone to Dubai twice. The other tours were to Britain and Germany. The tours were for marketing of the KTDC's hospitality services. The trips to Dubai had resulted in additional bookings for 300 rooms at KTDC hotels. She acknowledged that the then Tourism Minister and the chairman of KTDC had not undertaken any foreign tours when the LDF was in power.
