Former Minister dead

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM May 25. The KPCC general secretary and former Minister, P. K. Velayudhan (55), died following a cardiac arrest at the Medical College Hospital here today.

According to hospital authorities, Mr. Velayudhan, who was under prolonged treatment for heart and kidney ailments, complained of severe chest pain at around 6.15 p.m.

He was rushed to the casualty wing of the MCH by relatives from his flat at the P.T. Chacko Nagar. He was pronounced dead by the duty doctor at around 6.30 p.m., the hospital authorities informed.

Mr. Velayudhan had served first as the Community Development Minister and later as the Transport Minister in the 1982-87 UDF Ministry headed by K. Karunakaran.

A native of Thrissur, Mr. Velayudhan was first elected to the Legislative Assembly from Pandalam in 1980.

Later, he became an MLA from Njarackal in 1982. He was a prominent leader of the Dalit Congress.

A good athlete during his college days, Mr. Velayudhan was the captain of the Calicut University athletic team in 1971.

He is survived by his father, Puthuveetil Kujnayyappan. His first wife, Girija, hailed from Ramavarmapuram in Thrissur. She has an adopted daughter.

His second wife, Jayashree, is settled in Thiruvananthapuram. Mr. Velayudhan has two children, Keerthi and Kiran.

The Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, has condoled the death of Mr. Velayudhan. He said the former leader had made significant contribution to the welfare of Scheduled castes and Scheduled Tribes in the State.
