Career guidance fair for students

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry May 24. An exhibition to create awareness among students passing out of high and higher secondary schools of the opportunities available to them would be held from May 27 at Gandhi Thidal by the Labour Department of the Pondicherry Administration.

Addressing newspersons here on Saturday, the Health and Labour Minister, E. Valsaraj, said the 21-day-long `vocational and career guidance fair' was aimed at providing full information to the students. Twenty institutions from Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu would set up information kiosks. Courses in arts, science and engineering disciplines would be showcased.

Registration of students with their latest educational certificates and other testimonials would be done at the Employment Exchange during working hours, he said.

Twenty five candidates were issued appointment orders at the end of a written test and personal interview for posting in the Honda Motor Cycle and Scooters India Private Limited, Haryana.

Mr. Valsaraj said this was the first time that the Labour Department had arranged for a camp to enable technically qualified candidates of Pondicherry to get employment opportunities in a private company in Haryana. The company had expressed its requirement of personnel in the trades of fitters, welders, machinists and motor mechanics.

A batch of 458 candidates (all Industrial Training Institute certificate holders) were called for the selection process from all the four regions of Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam.

A team of officers led by the Assistant Manager (Human Resource), Sandeep Gautam, camped here for three days from May 13 to hold the tests. Thirty eight candidates were selected at the end of the written and oral tests and twenty five of them were issued orders of appointment. They were asked to join duty before June 23.

Such recruitments would continue, the Minister said.

The Labour Commissioner, Rattan Singh, was present at the press conference.
