Ryot's suicide triggers protest

By Our Staff Reporter

NALGONDA MAY 25. Tension prevailed in the mandal headquarters of Nampally on Sunday following the suicide of a farmer, who according to his relatives took the extreme step after being harassed by the local SI.

According to information reaching here, Peddireddy Janga Reddy (60) ended his life by consuming insecticide in the afternoon after coming from the local police station. His sons — Sekhar Reddy and Kondal Reddy — alleged that the police foisted a false case against their father in a hut-burning case on the complaint of Peddireddy Sesha Reddy on Friday. They also alleged that the SI "assaulted'' his father when he went to the station to file a complaint against Sesha Reddy. Unable to bear the humiliation the old man committed suicide. Enraged by the death, TRS activists staged a dharna in front of Sesha Reddy's house demanding his arrest and action against the SI. They tried to attack him but was rescued by the police.

Police, however, said Janga Reddy confessed to the crime and committed suicide after being scolded by his sons. The SP, V.C. Sajjanar, ordered a probe into the incident.
