Kerala
By Our Staff Reporter
Mr. Veerendrakumar said here today that Tamil Nadu has already constructed a dam on its side and taken steps to divert the waters of the Pampa and Achenkoil rivers of Kerala. This will bring disaster to the unique Kuttanad eco-system and result in acute irrigation and drinking water scarcity in Central Travancore. The argument of Tamil Nadu is that there is excess discharge in the Pampa and Achenkoil rivers going unutilised into the sea. It has suggested a scheme for diverting these excess waters across the border to the Vaigai river in Tamil Nadu for the benefit of the farmers of that State. The new National Water Policy allows such diversion of excess water. The Kerala Government should have opposed this provision of the National Water Policy, he said.
