Black panther dies in zoo

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE MAY 25. A rare black panther, the only one of its kind in the Chamrajendra Zoological Gardens here, was found dead on Sunday. According to a press release, the 14-year-old panther, named Julie, was found dead in its holding room.

The panther which was ailing was said to be suffering from acute bronchial pneumonia. Veterinary doctors at the zoo treated the animal after it was found to be sick. The longevity of panthers in captivity is said to be around 15 years.

The release said that Julie was brought to the Mysore Zoo from Karwar by the Forest Department in 1991 after it was rescued from a well. Black panthers are rare and found in some parts of the forests in the Western Ghats. The black colour of the skin is attributed to the mutation of the normal coloured genes.
