Australia takes the honours

NEW DELHI MAY 25. Host Australia swept both the boys and girls titles at the expense of Japan in the Asia-Oceania World junior (under-14) tennis tournament in Melbourne.

The top four teams in the boys and girls sections will make it to the World group final to be played later in the season.

India finished sixth in both the sections.

The results:

Boys (final): Australia beat Japan 3-0 (Patrick Nicholls bt Kei Nishikori 7-5, 6-2; Alex Bothe bt Fumiaki Kita 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4; Alex Bothe and J.P. Smith bt Fumiaki Kita and Munetoshi Kumagae 6-3, 2-6 (retired)).

Girls (final): Australia beat Japan 3-0 (Shayna McDowell bt Mayo Kato 6-4, 6-3; Holly Cao bt Ayumi Morita 6-2, 6-0; Shayna McDowell and Michelle Brycki bt Ayumi Morita and Emiko Ito 6-3, 6-4).

The final placings: Boys: 1. Australia, 2. Japan, 3. Indonesia, 4. Philippines, 5. Korea, 6. India, 7. Thailand, 8. Chinese Taipei, 9. New Zealand, 10. Hong Kong, 11. Sri Lanka and 12. Malaysia.
