Strategy to create awareness about PC repurchase

BANGALORE May 10. Windows 95/98 PCs with a 10-20 GB hard disk are being replaced by newer models powered by latest processors. The PC replacement cycle has undergone a drastic upheaval over the last couple of years thanks to personal computer (PC) manufacturers and microprocessor firms churning out new technology, keeping with the Moore's Law. The Y2K factor was also responsible for PC upgrades with migration of legacy applications and hardware systems to newer models.

While mature markets such as the U.S. have a replacement period of three to three-and-a-half years for PCs/desktops, mobile devices have a two to two-and-a-half year cycle. In India, however, this is yet to take place with a vast majority of PC users preferring to use redundant machines. Microprocessor major Intel plans to change this scenario and bring the country's PC users in line with the PC replacement cycle followed by mature markets.``At present, there are over half-a-million PCs in India, which are over three-and-a-half years old. The system needs to replaced after this period, and we are working with the industry to provide the right solutions and initiate PC replacement,'' Vivek Sharma, Regional Marketing Manager, Enterprise Marketing, Intel Asia Electronics, told The Hindu. For this, Intel has adopted a three-pronged strategy wherein it would work with software application providers, OEMs, and local vendors to create greater awareness about PC repurchase and find new solutions suited to the requirements of the Indian customer. According to Mr. Sharma, it is critical for companies to look at the repurchase of PCs and the issues involved such as end-point security, seamless computing which can ensure a mobile computing environment, and customer relationship management.

Moreover, the company has also commenced the PC repurchase mode within Intel's expansive organisational structure itself.
