SNDP aiming to take over JSS

A. Harikumar

ALAPPUZHA MAY 10. The SNDP Yogam is learnt to have started efforts to gain the control of the JSS. This move is based on the decision of the Yogam leadership to become a political force. Sources in the Yogam who revealed this said a three-member group of SNDP leaders had been formed to sort out the issue with the JSS leadership. They said that considering the complexities involved in forming a political party and the influence of the Yogam in the JSS, the Yogam leadership decided to take over the JSS leadership.

Recently, the SNDP Yogam general secretary, Vellappally Natesan, in an interview had said that the Yogam would become a political force but would not form a new political party. The sources said this was a clear indication of the Yogam's plans.

The SNDP Yogam president, who was a former State council member of the JSS, is said to be actively involved in the present move.

He had left the JSS following the police action at Sivagiri in 1995.

The sources said he had changed his stance since then. They pointed out that at several places where the JSS was weak, the SNDP branches were forming units of the JSS.

Leaders and cadres of the JSS are worried about the future of the party. While a section of leaders are supporting the move, another section is opposing the move. The party chief, K.R. Gouri's stand on the issue is not known.

Those who oppose the Yogam move fear that the JSS would lose its left character once the SNDP Yogam takes over the party.

Pointing out the context in which the party was formed, they said the move would lead to the loss of credibility of the party.

The division is evident in the conferences of the party at various levels progressing at present prior to the third State conference of being held in Kottayam in August.

According to reports, this division had led to even expulsion of local leaders in some places. There are also reports of division along caste lines.

Some leaders of the JSS who had been active at the time of the formation of the party are now being sidelined because of the caste factor.
