Kerala
By Our Staff Reporter
In his inaugural address, Mr. Joshi said that the principles on eradication of social inequalities, providing equal opportunities everyone, education and economic liberation, emphasised by Sree Narayana Guru were more relevant today than ever before. Sankaracharya and Sree Narayana Guru, two illustrious sons of Kerala, had profoundly transformed the very texture of Kerala society, said Mr. Joshi. He stressed that the Guru's teachings, which hold much similarity to the tenets of Vedanta and to the basic beliefs of Sikhism, were not restricted to any particular region, but were universal truths. They are interpretations of Sanathana Dharma, according to Mr. Joshi. Narayana Guru, who held a highly eclectic outlook on caste, had a keen awareness on the evils of caste systems and he roused Hindus from their age-old slumber, said Mr. Joshi. He had devoted an entire life for the upliftment of the downtrodden, added the Minister. The Minister stressed that the issues that confronted the Guru in those days were very much alive even these days. Speaking on the social and economical profile of Kerala, Mr. Joshi said that though Kerala had impressive records of human development, in terms of a high life expectancy, literacy, public health facilities, fall in infant mortality, birth rate and death rate, Kerala does not figure anywhere on the list of economically superior States. Kerala had to attract investments, mainly in the form of FDI, after making an atmosphere conducive to the growth of industry and commerce. It had to device a policy to make the foreign returnees develop themselves into entrepreneurs, said the Minister. He expressed the hope that the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Sangham could turn itself into a propeller of economic transformation and political change. Delivering the "anugraha prabhashanam", Swami Satchidananda from Gayathri Asramam, Chalakudy, said that Sree Narayana Guru was a world teacher and prophet of a future world. He had given a practical interpretation to the theory of Advaitha perpetrated by Adi Sankara, according to Satchidananda. Vellayani Arjunan, director of State Institute of Encyclopaedia, who delivered the introductory address, put forward a resolution on establishing a new university in the name of Sree Narayana Guru under the auspices of S.N. Global Mission. He also put forth three proposals, including one for founding a university, for establishing a S.N. Chair in Central universities and publishing a four-volume encyclopaedia on the Guru. The Education Minister, Nalakathu Soopy, who offered felicitations, promised every possible support from the State Government in the attempt to establish the Sree Narayana University. The SNDP Yogam general secretary, Vellappilly Natesan, who welcomed the gathering, said that the idea of the world convention originated from a desire for the unification of the followers of Sree Narayana abroad. The Yogam president, C.K. Vidya Sagar, presided over the function. The Tourism and Fisheries Minister, K.V. Thomas, the Bharathiya Vichara Kendram director, P. Parameswaran, M.G. University former Vice-Chancellor and director of National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC), V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, P.C. Thomas, MP, the BJP State vice-president, P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, D. Sugathan MLA, Gokulam Gopalan, B. Aravindakshan and G. Sathyan also spoke. The programmes began with a `Rangapooja' presented by students of M.E.T. Perumbavoor. In the evening session, papers were presented by Paravur Sreedharan Thanthri on `Sree Narayana Guru and Thanthra Vidya,' V. Sisupala Panikker (Sree Sankara University of Sanskrit, Kalady) on `Sree Narayana Guru and His Contributions to Indian Philosophy,' and P. Parameswaran.
