Thailand defeats India

NEW DELHI MAY 10. The Indian girls lost a close encounter 1-2 to the fourth-seeded Thailand in the semifinals of the Asia-Oceania Junior Fed Cup tennis tournament in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

Kartiki Bhat and Sanaa Bhambri lost the decisive doubles 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 2-6 against Nudnida Luangnam and Pichittra Thongdach. Sanaa had given a good start for India beating Nudnida 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), but Tara Iyer lost rather tamely 1-6, 3-6 to Pichittra in the second singles between the No.1 players.

Perhaps, Tara was tired after playing five sets in all in singles and doubles the previous day in the quarterfinals against Korea. She had played only singles till then in the two league encounters against New Zealand and Japan.

Quite surprisingly, Japan, that had lost 1-2 to the second-seeded India in the league, overpowered the top-seeded Chinese Taipei 3-0 in the other semifinals.

Thus, Thailand will play Japan in the final, while India will clash with Chinese Taipei for the third place. All the four teams have, of course, booked their berth for the World Group final to be played later in the season.
