While the death roll as a ratio of the total number of cases was not as alarming as in some other places, China's concerns centred on the reality that there was as yet no sign of any abatement of the menace on the mainland. A matter of some relief in this gloomy situation was that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China recorded a single-digit figure of incremental cases for yet another day. The diminishing incidence of the disease was noted for the first time yesterday. Yet, Hong Kong's toll today stood at over 170. In Taiwan too, the situation worsened, with the territory reporting a total of 10 deaths so far. The SARS-related situation in Singapore remained somewhat stable for yet another day.
