Letters to the Editor
Sir, The hue and cry over doctors, engineers and scientists joining the IAS and the IPS is not justified as it is their constitutional right to opt for employment of their choice. The disparity in emoluments among the lowest and the highest cadres has narrowed down since Independence. Moreover, most of the IAS and IPS officers have no job satisfaction as they are restrained from discharging their duties due to political interference. Doctors and engineers should not opt for IAS and IPS services where their professional expertise cannot be utilised fully. The Government should treat them on a par with the civil services as they are in no way inferior in their capabilities.
Joy Eapen,
* * * Sir, Debarring professionals from entering civil services makes a mockery of the freedom to choose, which is an integral part of democracy. Since professionals constitute only a small percentage of the candidates in the civil services, it will not result in much harm to technology. Professionals who enter the civil services should be placed in departments which suit their background, so that these departments can progress.
Vedula Krishna,
