Salgaocar trounces Indian Bank

Margao April 24. Trailing by a goal at the breather former champion Salgaocar Sports Club came back strongly in the second half to trounce Indian Bank, Chennai 4-2 in the penultimate round of the OIL PSU National Football League match here at the Nehru stadium Fatorda on Thursday.

For Salgaocar, goals came through Sabastiao Endro in the 51st minute, Climax Lawrence in the 56th, Bello Rasaq in the 73rd minute and substitute Alex Ambrose in the 75th minute.

For Indian Bank K.G. Joseph (27) and Ananda Vasan (70) scored the goals.

With this win Salgaocar tallys 41 points and jumped to the second place below league leaders East Bengal with 46 points. Goa's Vasco Sports is relegated to third spot with 40 points with one match less. Indian Bank remained on the same 10th place with 20 points from equal number of outings.

Salgaocar started full steam from the word go and would have been up by at least couple of goals in the first half had they utilised the opportunities but they faltered at the crucial juncture.

The home team came near scoring in the 5th minute when Bello Rasaq from the left flank passed to Tomba Singh whose shot was well saved by rival goalkeeper Edward Felix.

Indian Bank shot into the lead in the 27th minute through K.G. Joseph, who headed in a cross from Imran Mohammad 1-0.

Stung by the reverse, Salgaocar accelerated the pace of the game and could have levelled the score in the 28th minute but Sunday Seah's feeble shot landed into the hands of the rival goalkeeper.

Salgaocar had almost restored the parity at the stroke of the first half. Jatin Bhist floated the ball to Climax Lawrence, who headed towards well-positioned Bello Rasaq, who took a powerpacked shot but rival defender Ananda Vasan rescued his team with a timely goal line save.

Down by a goal at the breather, Salgaocar regrouped well and restored the parity in the 51st minute through Sebastiao Endro, who tapped the ball in the net after collecting a pass from Manitombi Singh. Inspired by the equaliser, Salgaocar continued to attack and increased its lead in the 56th minute through Climax Lawrence off a spot kick awarded by refree Saji Kurian when Bank's defender A. Villy brought down Salgaocar's forward Sunday Seah in the penalty area. Climax Lawrence made no mistake to convert the spot kick 2-1.

Indian Bank levelled the score in the 70th minute through Ananda Vasan following a flag kick taken by V.K. Harish 2-2.

Salgaocar consolidated its lead in the 73rd minute through Bello Rasaq off a well measured pass from Tomba Singh 3-2.

The home team scored the 4th goal in the 75th minute through substitute Alex Ambrose, who headed in a pass from Tomba Singh. Salgaocar's Bello Rasaq was adjudged the man of the match.
