Tamil Nadu was represented by N. Niranjan, R. Kannan, K. Krishna Kumar, S.K. Chari, S.R.C. Sekar and R. Rajkumar. The final match was played in four sessions of 16 boards each. Maharashtra established a considerable lead of 48 IMP (59-11) in the very first session. Tamil Nadu gave away 35 IMP in 3 boards, missing a slam and a couple of games. Taking advantage of the lapses, Maharashtra forged ahead by 48 IMP (59-11). However, Tamil Nadu fought back reducing the margin of difference to only 20 IMP by securing 19 IMP in the second session and 9 IMP in the third. The last session was played with Maharashtra having a lead of 20 VP (97-77). Tamil Nadu fell back having lost 24 IMP in 2 boards. In one board Maharashtra played in 4 NT in which Tamil Nadu played in 4 D giving down by 2 tricks, losing 13 IMP in the board. In another board Tamil Nadu missed a slam giving away 11 IMP. Both these lapses were avoidable. In the last session Tamil Nadu lost 23 IMP in 2 boards. A vulnerable slam was missed, and later a vulnerable game was missed. These two lapses enabled Maharashtra to gain 13 IMP. The match ended with Maharashtra gaining 10 IMP and winning the match and the title by 30 IMP (131-101). Maharashtra had won the trophy in 1970 (Bangalore), 1976 (Nainital), 1978 (Bangalore), 1979 (Ooty), 1985 (Mumbai), 1986 (Ooty), 1988 (Pune), 1994 (Mumbai), 1999 (Mount Abu) and 2003 (Dehradun.). Tamil Nadu triumphed in 1990 (Thekkady), 1992 (Shimla) and 1995 (Bangalore).
