Tourism potential in Malabar to be developed

KONDOTTI (MALAPPURAM DIST.) APRIL 24. The Tourism Minister, K. V. Thomas, today said that special emphasis would be given for tourism development in the Malabar region.

Inaugurating the `Yathri Nivas' constructed by the Kerala Tourism Department here, Prof. Thomas said that `Malabar Travel Mart' would be organised in Malappuram in August for the development of tourism. All tour operators and prominent personalities in the tourism sector would be invited to the Mart, which would be attended by the Union Tourism Minister.

He said that the works for the Kozhikode Dream City Project, which had come up for the Global Investors Meet (GIM), would begin soon. Discussions would be held in the first week in Kozhikode itself.

He said that the Kottakkunnu Tourism Project at Malappuram was under the consideration of the Tourism Department. Efforts were on to set up hotels of Taj and Oberoi in the Kozhikode airport. `Uru' system would be implemented for the development of water transport-related tourism in the Kochi-Kozhikode water way.

K. N. Qader, MLA presided. E. Ahammed, MP, the District Collector, K. R. Muraleedharan, the Tourism Director, Alkesh Kumar Sharma, the Tourism joint director, V. A. Aurangazeeb, the district panchayat president, M. Ummer and S. Vijayakumar were among those who spoke on the occasion.

The `Yathri Nivas' was constructed at a cost of Rs. 90 lakh. The CPWD had been entrusted with the construction works. There are 10 double rooms and a restaurant in the `Yathri Nivas'.
