186 couples wed in mass marriage

By Our Correspondent

SIRSI APRIL 24. As many as 186 couples tied the knot at an all-religion free mass marriage ceremony held at Mundgod on Wednesday. Chandrashekhar Shivayogi Rajayogendra, Swami of Brahath Hosamath, Hubli, and R.V. Deshpande, Minister for Large- and Medium-scale Industries and minister in charge of the district, were present.

The seer blessed the couples and said mutual understanding and harmony were the key to a healthy and successful marriage. Mr. Deshpande presided over the function organised by the V.R. Deshpande Memorial Trust, Bangalore.

He said mass marriages ensured that the poor did not incur debts or spend too much money on weddings. He said the trust he had set up in the memory of his father, V.R. Deshpande, had been arranging mass marriages for the past 16 years with the cooperation of the local people.

Mr. Deshpande urged the poor to benefit from the trust's activities and said people of other religions should take advantage of mass marriage programmes. He urged the newlyweds to plan a small family.

The minister, who represents Mundgod taluk in the Legislative Assembly, said he was aware of the problems of the people, who had been affected by successive severe drought, and claimed he was doing his best to get farmers adequate crop insurance compensation. He said drought relief and other works worth Rs. 2 crore were underway.
