Though the department suffered a loss of Rs. 1,600 crore annually, efforts were being made to reduce it, Mr. Naik said. The department was trying to keep pace with the changing times. When the courier service was introduced, the department had launched the Speed Post service. But the cost of the service was high, he said. The department had adopted the V-Sat system in Udupi, Brahmavar, and other places to ensure smooth transfer of money. Mr. Naik said the department was diversifying into new areas. It would start issuing the Manipal Health Cards from May 2 in eight districts of the State. "E-post" would be launched soon. The collaboration with Western Union Money Transfer had started paying dividends for both the department and the customers, Mr. Naik said. N. Padmakara Nayak, office-bearer of the Udupi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCI), said the budgetary allocation for the Department of Posts was declining. Besides, most of the postal services were subsidised. It was necessary for the department to come up with new programmes to improve its resource mobilisation. George Samuel welcomed the gathering. K.P. Shet proposed a vote of thanks. Ammunje Dayananda Nayak, President, UCCI, was present.
