dated April 15, 1953: MacArthur On Korea

General Douglas MacArthur declared in a letter to the Senator Henry Byrd (Democrat, Virginia) of the U.S. Senate's Armed Services Committee that if America threatened to strike at China, that would force Russia "to settle the Korean war and all other pending global issues on equitable terms. "The controversial and strong-minded General's letter, made public in Washington on the 24th, showed him vigorously renewing the approach which had partly led to his dismissal by President Truman as the Allies' Far East Commander, MacArthur said, "We still possess the potential to destroy Red China's flimsy industrial base and sever her tenuous supply lines from the Soviet Union. A warning to strike at China will provide the necessary leverage to induce Russia to bring the Korean struggle to an end without further bloodshed. "Gen. MacArthur did not say how the U.S. should hit China, but recalled that Washington officials had, early in 1951, vetoed his proposals to bomb Chinese supply bases, naval blockade China, and use Chinese Nationalist troops from Formosa. Such destruction, he said, would have denied Communist China the resources to support modern war and sustain large military forces in the field. Gen. MacArthur agreed with Senator Byrd who had written asking for his comments, that there were ammunition shortages in Korea.
