Dharam Singh warns contractors

BANGALORE April 23. The Minister for Public Works, Dharam Singh, has said that private contractors, who have taken up the work of laying roads and maintaining State highways, will be pulled up if they are found to be lax.

At a review meet on highway works here on Wednesday, Mr. Singh said there was only a year left to complete laying 7,600 km. of State highways for which Housing and Urban Development Corporation (Hudco) had provided a loan of Rs. 220 crore. The "Public Works Department will itself take up the work if the contractors are not up to the task," he said.

Present at the meeting were senior officials of the department, including the Principal Secretary, K. L.Negi, and the Secretary, G.C.Tallur, and the Managing Director of the KRDCL, M.R.Kamble, engineers, and private contractors.

Mr. Singh said an additional Rs. 170 crore would be spent on the upkeep of 28,000 km. of major district roads.
