KSRTC calls for tenders for bus terminus

By B.S. Ramesh

BANGALORE April 23. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has called for tenders to construct a state-of-art bus terminus at a cost of Rs. 20 crore on Mysore Road.

The KSRTC Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, K. Jairaj, told The Hindu on Wednesday that construction of the bus terminus was expected to begin in July 2003 and be completed in 15 months.

The bus terminus, which will be built on the land which once belonged to the Mysore Chrome Tanning Company, will help decongest the Kempe Gowda bus terminus and ease traffic congestion in and around the Majestic area. The KSRTC is running some buses to Mysore and other places from the area.

The bus terminus is scheduled to become operational in October 2004. Initially, south-bound buses will operate from the Kempe Gowda bus terminus and the Mysore Road terminus. Later, all buses to south Karnataka, including Mysore and Madikeri, are expected to commence their journey from the Mysore Road terminus. The Bangalore-Mysore corridor is not only one of the most profitable for the KSRTC but also the heaviest in terms of traffic.

The plan to construct the terminus was conceived sometime ago as one of four satellite bus termini to reduce congestion at the Kempe Gowda Bus terminus and in the Majestic area. The KSRTC felt that smaller termini on Mysore Road, Tumkur Road, Old Madras Road, and Hosur Road would not only ease the pressure on the Kempe Gowda terminus but also help the corporation provide better service to commuters.

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will also operate services from the terminus. Besides, the KSRTC and the BMTC will set up depots adjacent to the terminus to ensure regular and punctual services.

The terminus, to be modelled on the Kempe Gowda bus stand, will have state-of-the art facilities and amenities for passengers. As many as 400 schedules a day are expected to be operated from the terminus, which will have at least 20 "departure bays. A commercial complex and parking facilities for two-wheelers and four-wheelers have been planned.

Infrastructure project

Apart from the Mysore Road terminus, the KSRTC will take up a Rs. 90-crore project over a period of four years to develop infrastructure in the corporation.

Under the infrastructure plan, the KSRTC will be build bus stands at Dharmasthala, Kukke Subramanya, Sagar, Channapatna, and other places besides setting up seven depots in places such as Malavalli, Puttur, Mulbagal, and Gauribidanur.

The KSRTC Chief Engineer, Jagadish Chandra, said Rs. 4.85 crore had been earmarked for upgrading bus stands, and Rs. 6 crore for construction of depots. The Kempe Gowda bus stand had been remodelled at a cost of Rs. 22 lakh, and plans for the construction of a commercial complex and eparture bays were ready.

The KSRTC would build 300 staff quarters. This year, it had earmarked Rs. 30 crore for taking up infrastructure-related projects, he added.
