`Industrialists eyeing AP with interest'

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD April 23. Industrialists are showing interest in coming to Andhra Pradesh, thanks to the efforts being made by the State Government in creating the much-needed infrastructure like power and roads.

Revealing this here on Wednesday, an official of the Industries Department said that the interest shown by businessmen from different states indicated that business was happening in Hyderabad vis-a-vis Andhra Pradesh.

He expressed confidence that the Government's efforts at creating infrastructure would show positive results in two or three years. Andhra Pradesh was on par with Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, he said.

``We are being considered on par with them. In fact in areas like power and roads we are better. This indeed was no small feat'', he said, adding that the Government wanted to improve further on the infrastructure front.

Once the improved infrastructure was in place, it would become easy for the 102 large industrial units, which had been approved by the State-level Single Window Clearance Committee, to come up.

Among these units, the official listed the expansion project of Lanco Power which was likely to attract an investment of Rs.1,000 crores. Also in the pipeline was a mint unit in Chittoor district with an investment of Rs.20 crores.

Among the ambitious projects, the State looked forward to was the Volkswagen car unit, the official stated. "We have presented our case. We are really very keen about a project of that size'' which was likely to bring in a huge investment and create large employment potential. Once this project comes to the State, the industrial scenario would undergo a sea change, he pointed out.

The official indicated that the German car major might go in for two units, possibly in two different States, although it was too early to say what was in store for AP. But the fact remained that a team of Volkswagen had visited the city sometime ago and held discussions with State officials representing different departments.
