Cop charged with vehicle lifting jumps to death

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD April 23. A constable working in the Yadagirigutta police station in the adjoining Nalgonda district jumped to death from a commercial complex in Secunderabad on Tuesday night.

Thirty-six-year-old Narasimha Raju was being brought to the Mahankali police station for questioning in connection with the theft of a motor cycle when he broke free of the accompanying constables.

The Joint Commissioner of Police (Security), R. Eshwar Reddy, told presspersons on Wednesday that Raju took the extreme step before he could be brought inside the station on the third floor of the commercial complex.

Recounting the sequence of events leading to the death of the police constable, the police officer said that on April 18 evening, the vehicle of a computer service engineer, Bhaskar, was stolen from Chenoy Trade Centre. Instead of going to the police, he circulated a hand-written pamphlet about the theft among auto consultants in King Koti the next day.

On Tuesday evening, an auto consultant found Narasimha Raju trying to sell the motor cycle. On questioning Raju, he found his replies unconvincing and sent word to the Narayanguda police. A crime party from the station took Raju into custody and took charge of the motor cycle.

When the Narayanguda police learnt that the person they had taken into custody was a constable and a suspect in a theft that had beenm committed in the Mahankali police limits, they sent word to the latter. Three constables, Bhaskar and his friends went to Narayanguda and brought Raju to the Mahankali station.

The Deputy Commissioner (North), M.V. Ramachandra Raju, said that on arrival at the station, Bhaskar and his two friends took the elevator first. In the second trip, Raju and two other constables came to the third floor. As soon as the trio stepped out, Raju broke free and ran upstairs, from where he jumped to the ground. He was rushed to Gandhi Hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

Enquiries revealed that Narasimha Raju's father, Jagannatha Raju, had also served as police constable and that after his death, his son was given the job in 1989 on compassionate grounds. He married to Vishnupriya in 1990 and had no children yet. He was not known to be facing any financial crunch.
