He told presspersons that about Rs. 150 crore was needed for the project and the Railways had planned to complete the work up to Bagalkot by December 2004 and the remaining by 2005. Most of the drains and small bridges had been completed. Besides, earth work (widening the track bund) on the 192-km. line was over. Only two major civil structures were yet to be completed. The Rs. six-crore Honaganahalli Bridge across the Don River was likely to be ready by the end of June 2004. Tenders would be called within a week's time for the work on the Malaprabha Bridge near Holealur. The bridge would be completed in 15 months from the date of awarding the work. Once civil work was over, the rails could be laid quickly, he said. The work planned for this year would require Rs. 40 crore, Mr. Udayshankar said. Although the allocation in the Railway Budget was only Rs. 10 crore, the State Government would provide a matching grant as per the cost-sharing agreement. The shortfall could be met by drawing funds from other heads. To complete the work in time, Rs. 60 crore would have to be provided next year and Rs. 50 crore in 2005, he said. Saibaba, Deputy Chief Engineer, Broadgauge Project, was present.
