Mandal-level polls pass off peacefully

By Our Staff Reporter

KHAMMAM April 23. The mandal-level organisational polls of the Telugu Desam seemed to be more an exercise for making the cadres battle ready. It is choice by consensus in most of the cases. A majority of the mandal units barring a few exceptions had the ad hoc convenors elected as presidents. The din and bustle of organisational polls were totally missing.

Almost all the mandal units in Sathuapalli Assembly constituency were finalised with unanimity. Though the Minister for Roads and Buildings, Tummala Nageswara Rao, who represented the constituency stayed away during the election, the selection of candidates for Dammapet, Penuballi, Vemsoor, Sathupalli, Aswaraopet and Kallur bore his stamp.

The elections for the mandal units in Madhira constituency were held in the presence of the constituency MLA, Kondabala Koteswara Rao. He could make it a smooth affair by helping the local leaders iron out the irritants. The election for the mandal units in Bhadrachalam constituency were held in Manuguru. The intervention of senior leaders however could not help avoid election in some mandals.

Similarly, the consensus eluded so far as the election for the mandal units in Palair Assembly constituency were concerned. As a result the elections were deferred. It some cases as many as ten candidates contested for mandal unit president's post. As a result the elections were put off. The party leaders had taken up an exercise for sorting out the differences between two groups so as to select the candidates by unanimity.

Addressing the party workers, the district Minister, Tummala Nageswara Rao, called upon party workers to realise the fact that the committee being elected now would have to shoulder greater responsibility. The party would be facing the elections with these committees. Hence he said that party workers must choose the right and effective candidates. The committees would have to keep the cadres battle ready.

He said that the Tanamcherla project would be taken up at a cost of Rs. 7 crores. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, would lay the foundation stone. The mandal-level office-bearers who fail to live up to the expectations of the cadres would not be spared by the leadership.
