Presiding over the installation ceremony of the new office-bearers of the Association of Indian Surgeons, Mangalore City branch, here recently, he said that the Government should also ensure affordable treatment for the poor. Speaking about the progress achieved in the field of medical education and healthcare in Dakshina Kannada, Mr. Hegde said visionaries such as T.M.A. Pai had contributed a great deal in this regard. He also recalled the services rendered by surgeons such as M.V.Shetty, Venkat Rao, and Adappa, and advised the office-bearers to emulate their example. The outgoing Chairman of the association, Bhasker Shetty, in his welcome address, expressed the hope that the association would continue to grow and the members would strive to serve the people. He said the association should conduct continuing medical education programmes and scientific and educative sessions regularly. Dr. Shetty handed over a cheque for Rs.1 lakh to the Vice-President of the district unit of the Indian Medical Association towards the Indian Medical Association Building Fund. The outgoing Secretary, Ranjit Kumar Shetty, presented a report on the activities of the association. The outgoing Treasurer, Sriram Bhat, presented the accounts.
