Sir, The chairman of the task force on interlinking of rivers, Suresh Prabhu, while coming out in strong defence of linking of the peninsular rivers, expressed doubt about the cost factor of nearly Rs. 5.6 lakh crores. On earlier occasions, experts had proved the feasibility by working out the cost and the benefits derived. The mobilisation of such a huge sum had also been arrived at. The interlinking would boost the cost of arid lands in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu through which the river flows; naturally, the landowners would share the cost; betterment tax and World Bank aid would supplement. In ten years, the northern States would be saved from flash floods and the southern region relieved of acute drought conditions; in both cases, loss of precious human lives would be averted.
