Singur waters best bet, says expert

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD April 22. Noted environmentalist and senior academician of Andhra University, T. Shivaji Rao, wondered why the Government was banking on Krishna waters for the twin cities when water in the river was not adequate at all. Singur, whose capacity was 30 tmcft, was a more viable and cheaper option, "but politicians never think or are never allowed to think by the bureaucrats,'' he maintained.

Speaking at the "Earth Day Celebrations - 2003'' organised by the Centre for Environment Institute of Post Graduate Studies and Research, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, here on Tuesday, the environmentalist underlined the need for right solutions for problems putting to optimum use the available resources. "Every year as much as 2,000 tmcft of Godavari water is allowed to go waste into the Bay of Bengal while all that cities like Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam need is 5 tmcft and 2 tmcft of water respectively.

So much so for our planning,'' he said. Prof. Rao also made a fervent plea for taking up cloud seeding in a big way to bring rains to the State. "Successive Governments and a series of expert committees have relegated the concept to the backburner despite proven results in our own backyards in Hyderabad, Tandur, Visakhapatnam and other areas,'' he pointed out. A revival was the need of the hour in view of the severe drought conditions. Y. Anjaneyulu, Head, Centre for Environment, JNTU, said the kits prepared by them for testing arsenic, flouride and micro biological components as a part of a Department of Atomic Energy sponsored study would be commercially released by the Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) shortly.

The JNTU Vice-Chancellor, Y. Venkatarami Reddy, the AICTE regional committee chairman, P. Dayaratnam, also spoke.
